What “without a charging card” really means
Charging without a charging card simply means you do not need a physical RFID card to unlock the station.
Payment can still work in several ways:
- directly with a debit or credit card at a terminal;
- contactlessly through NFC;
- through a website opened from a QR code on the charger;
- with a charging app, depending on the service with or without an account.
So “without a charging card” does not automatically mean “without an app,” “without registration,” or “without a contract.” Those are separate questions.
For public charge points installed in Germany after December 14, 2017, the Bundesnetzagentur says that ad-hoc charging without a permanent contract must be available. The payment method depends partly on when the station entered service and who operates it.
Four ways to charge spontaneously
Pay at a card terminal
Many newer fast-charging locations have a payment terminal. You pay with a supported card in much the same way as at a fuel station.
It is direct, but it is not available everywhere. You may also see the price only after arriving at the charger.
Use a QR code
Many operators place a QR code on the charge point. It opens a website where you select the connector and provide a payment method.
This works without installing an app, but it can be fiddly on the road. Check that the code genuinely belongs to the station and has not been covered by another sticker.
Use the operator’s app
Many operators provide their own app. It usually requires an account and a saved payment method.
That can work well if you regularly use the same network. On a trip, however, the number of apps, accounts, and tariffs can grow quickly.
Use a multi-network charging app
A multi-network app combines stations from different operators.

Charging with ChargEV FleX

Find a station
Open the map and search near you, around a destination, or along a planned route.
You can filter by connector, charging power, operator, and price. Stations where ChargEV FleX can start the session directly can be shown specifically.
Check the price
The price is visible before charging, both on the map and in the station details.
The components are shown separately, including where applicable:
- price per kilowatt-hour;
- time-based costs;
- blocking fees;
- an operator’s session fee.
ChargEV FleX does not add its own start fee. If an operator charges a fee per session, it is displayed without an additional markup.
Authorize the payment method
Pay with Apple Pay or a supported credit card.
Before charging, a reservation amount may be authorized. This is not the final payment. It acts as security and is released or reconciled with the actual charging cost after billing.
Plug in and charge
Select the connector and follow the instructions in the app. Once the session is running, ChargEV FleX shows its progress and sends important updates through push notifications.
Receive the invoice
After charging, a PDF invoice is created automatically. You can optionally provide a billing recipient or company name first.
The invoice contains the relevant location, time, station, consumption, and cost details.
Do I really need no account?
ChargEV FleX does not require a conventional user account with an email address and password.
The app still needs to be installed on your iPhone, and payment uses Apple Pay or a supported credit card.
This is different from charging entirely without an app: you use one app, but you do not register, enter a subscription, or manage another account.
Is charging without a subscription always cheaper?
Not automatically.
A paid charging subscription can make sense if you charge publicly very often or regularly use one fast-charging network. Occasional public charging may not justify a monthly fee or several parallel subscriptions.
Look beyond the price per kilowatt-hour and consider:
- monthly base fees;
- session fees;
- time and blocking fees;
- roaming markups;
- how often you actually charge.

Can I use every public charger without registering?
